The Piaggione and the grain warehouses of Cosimo I

Bastione San Gallo e ponte seicentesco, cittadella nuova (L. Corevi, Comune di Pisa)
The policy of Cosimo I de’ Medici, who wanted to completely renovate the city of Pisa, provided for a substantial investment of money to be allocated to commercial structures. In the district of Kinzica, today San Martino, the narrow medieval alleys were modified to create a new block, between Via la Tinta and the moat of the Fortress. The grain warehouses were born, built in rows according to a uniform module, which overlooked Via la Tinta and Via del Piaggione (Via Bovio). Each door had an iron fan opening and a sandstone window. At the ends of the streets two trapezoidal-shaped buildings were created, whose façades were decorated with Medici coats of arms (Piazza Toniolo and Lungarno Galilei). The Piaggione was an embankment located between the current Via Bovio and the Fortress, containing the wheat holes (silos). Some traces are still visible of the seventeenth-century bridge of the Sangallo Bastion.
