Scorcio - Piazza Cairoli, o della Berlina (G. Bettini, Comune di Pisa)
Its name is in fact Piazza Cairoli in honour of the five brothers who fell as patriots, but the Pisans still use the name of when, in the Middle Ages and in later times, criminals (guilty of minor offences) were put to the pillory, i.e. exposed to public mockery to be laughed at by all. On the first pillar of the loggia, on the corner with via Rigattieri, there is still one of the iron rings to which the criminals were bound. Another indication of the past of this square comes from the statue, a work by Pierino da Vinci, grandson of Leonardo, placed on top of the column that stands in the centre above the fountain: the elegant female figure holds the cornucopia, symbol of abundance, in memory of the fruit and vegetable market that took place here, hence the name piazza de’ chavoli (cabbage square). The column, however, like the fountain and the loggia, dates back to the urban changes implemented by Ferdinando I de’ Medici between the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century. The square is an ideal places for an aperitif or an evening snack.
