Ozmo 'Galileo Galilei'

The “Portrait of Galileo Galilei”, created in 2017 by Pisan artist Gionata Gesi, known as Ozmo, as part of the Welcome to Pisa urban art project, brings a contemporary street-art perspective to one of the city’s landmarks.

The large-scale mural depicts the profile of Galileo Galilei, within which a night sky filled with stars and planets unfolds. Several of the instruments associated with his astronomical observations appear in the lower section of the composition. The work thus creates a direct dialogue between the scientist, Pisa’s scientific heritage and the city’s cultural identity.

In 2022, the mural was painted over during renovation work on the building’s façade. Shortly after the work was completed, however, Ozmo recreated the mural himself.

The new painting retains the subject, composition and colours of the original, preserving its essential visual language and returning to the neighbourhood one of the most recognisable images along the Porta a Mare urban art trail.

Today, the mural represents an important meeting point between Pisa, Galileo Galilei and the city’s scientific heritage, reinterpreted through the language of street art. As part of the Porta a Mare urban art trail, it contributes to telling the story of Pisa through the meeting of history, scientific discovery and contemporary creativity.
