On the evening of Sunday, July 6, 2025, there will be a boat excursion "on the trail of the Wedding of Pisa with the sea", meeting at 4 p.m. in Pisa, at the Scalo Roncioni (Lungarno Mediceo).
In the Middle Ages Pisa and its countryside were a powerful Maritime Republic, master of ports, colonies, trade and markets throughout the Mediterranean.
The Pisans were skilled sculptors and merchants, expert sailors, indomitable warriors, incomparable builders of houses-towers, harbors, churches and boats.
In Pisa, every year, the Marriage with the Sea was celebrated: a solemn ceremony, still alive today in Cervia and Venice, in which Pisan boats went down the Arno to the sea during the holidays of San Pietro.Una girl, symbol of the city of Pisa, sat on a boat adorned with gold, followed by a multitude of galleys, with songs and music. A golden ring was thrown by the maiden in the sea waters, and sometimes fished out by fishermen, as a wish of prosperity for the maritime trades.
Since 2008, by the will of the Compagnia dello StilePisano and the Compagnia di Calci, this ancient rite has come back to life. The event, organized by the StilePisano Company, is realized this year in collaboration with the Association of Friends of Pisa (Associazione Amici di Pisa), and Calamo Association.
The boat will sail towards the sea, where a ring will be thrown, symbol of the union between Pisa, its Province and the sea, and the renewed maritime domain of the Pisan Republic. The gesture will be greeted by a celebratory toast.
The return to Pisa is scheduled for 8 p.m.
Reservation required.
The cost of participation is 20 euros per person as contribution expenses. Minors are free.
