On the occasion of the 950th anniversary of the laying of Pisa Cathedral’s first stone, the Graphics Museum at Palazzo Lanfranchi has set up an exhibition. “The Travelers’ Cathedral” takes visitors through a journey aimed at bringing back to life forgotten pictures and words - the words and pictures which, in modern times, have been dedicated as a tribute to one of the most celebrated and visited monuments in the world. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the so-called ‘Grand Tour’ age’, Pisa used to be an absolutely unmissable must-see. Contemporary travelers described in their diaries an experience which those of them who were also talented drawers turned with their pencils into speaking pictures; terms and pictorial lines account for one and the same event: the breath-taking encounter with the Cathedral’s Square and its extraordinary monumental complex – that’s to say, the power of a timeless, deep aesthetic and spiritual suggestion which goes beyond the limits of a single artistic expression: beyond its individual language.

The event has been curated by Lucia Tongiorgi Tomasi and Alessandro Tosi. Museo della Grafica, June, 15th - October, 30th, 2014
