The days of Urban Trekking, the sustainable tourism project that invites you to discover cities at a slow pace, away from the most popular routes, are back. An experience open to all, combining well-being, culture and the discovery of the most authentic and hidden corners of the territory.
It's not just a walk: it's a cultural, sustainable, and accessible experience for everyone, crossing streets, alleys, parks, and monuments outside of traditional circuits.
Walking in the city means looking with new eyes at what we thought we knew, reconnecting with the history, art, and soul of places.
This year too, the Department of Tourism of the Municipality of Pisa, for the 23rd edition of the Urban Trekking, is promoting two free itineraries to discover some of our city's secrets.
Groups will consist of a maximum of 30 people.
Participation is free but reservations are required by filling in the registration forms present for the individual itineraries.
Tours, except in particularly adverse weather conditions, will also be carried out in light rain. Capes or umbrellas are recommended.
Urban Trekking in Pisa: Route 1 - City Itinerary
On the Traces of the Essential in the heart of Franciscan Pisa
Eight hundred years after the Saint's death, this urban itinerary explores the places where the Order of Friars Minor left an indelible mark on the very form of the city of Pisa. The theme of the "essential" is expressed here through the contrast between the power of the Maritime Republic and the choice of absolute poverty witnessed by the first Franciscans.
The path winds through the historic alleys, the ancient places of welcome and charity and the majestic monuments of Pisan Christianity. From the care of the last in the old hospitals of the monumental square to the immensity of the Church of San Francesco — the cradle of the official biography of the Saint and his great works of art dispersed — participants will rediscover the value of the spiritual, architectural and social essentiality that has redefined Pisan history.
length: about 5.5 Km
travel time: 2.5 hours
difficulty: low
Starting point: Pisa Tourism Infopoint – Duomo, Piazza del Duomo 7, Pisa

Urban Trekking in Pisa: Route 2 - Nature Itinerary
On the Traces of the Essential: From Peter's Stone to the Sacred Woods of St. Francis
The Maritime Republic of Pisa has historically been one of the cradles of Tuscan Franciscanism. In 2026, eight hundred years after the Saint's death, this itinerary aims to explore the Franciscan concept of "essential" through a journey that unites the history of Pisan Christianity with the wild and pristine landscape of the Park.
The departure from the evocative Basilica of San Piero in Grado evokes the essentiality of the origins of Christianity in the West. From there, the physical and symbolic crossing of the Arno River through the area's brand new sustainable infrastructure opens the door to a true immersion in the Canticle of the Creatures. Walking in the protected areas of San Rossore means rediscovering the deep contact with creation, the meditative solitude sought by the first monks and friars, and the original beauty of a nature that endures time.
length: about 9.5 Km
travel time: 4 hours
difficulty: low
Starting point: Basilica of San Piero a Grado, Via Deodato Orlandi, 5, Pisa
Not too challenging hike and all flat.
