On Holocaust Remembrance Day 2026, the Museo della Grafica will host the Muselmann exhibition, promoted by CISE (Michele Luzzati Interdepartmental Centre for Jewish Studies, University of Pisa) and the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, in collaboration with the Museo della Grafica, the Municipality of Pisa, the University of Pisa, the Domus Mazziniana, the Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistics, the Department of Civilisation and Forms of Knowledge and the CIDIC (Centre for Innovation and the Dissemination of Culture) of the University of Pisa.

The exhibition, curated by Barbara Nahmad, displays graphic works created by teachers and students of the Brera Academy, inspired by the “Diary of Gusen. Letters to Maria” by the painter Aldo Carpi, who survived the Nazi concentration camps and was director of the Brera Academy from 1945 to 1958. His diary, containing letters and drawings, is still one of the most important artistic testimonies of life in the camps.
The title of the exhibition refers to the figure of the “Muselmann”, who often appears in Carpi's pages and, in camp jargon, referred to prisoners who were “hollowed out and disfigured by starvation and already in the throes of death: the 'Muselmanns” were the first to welcome the new arrivals, as if these “living dead” were to be used as a terrible warning' (B. Nahmad).

Exhibition opening with free admission, Friday 16 January 2026, 5 p.m. The exhibition will be open to the public free of charge from 16 to 31 January 2026:

  • Monday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
  • Tuesday to Friday 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.
