Riglione Cycle and Pedestrian Bridge

Ponte di Riglione, named after Ugo Melani, is a pedestrian and cycle bridge spanning the River Arno and connecting Riglione with the Cisanello area. Opened in 2023, the bridge provides an important link for walking and cycling while offering a new vantage point from which to appreciate Pisa’s riverside landscape.

Around 662 metres long, the bridge features a broad span supported by steel elements and forms a distinctive contemporary presence within the landscape of the Arno. Open to pedestrians and cyclists, it allows visitors to cross the river in a peaceful setting away from motor traffic, while connecting with the local network of walking and cycling routes.

The site also retains an important connection with local history. Before the present bridge was built, a boat service operated across the Arno at this point. Between 1945 and 1980, the service was run by Ugo Melani, a figure remembered by the local community and whose name the bridge now bears.

Crossing Ponte di Riglione offers an opportunity to discover a less familiar side of Pisa, where history, landscape and contemporary architecture meet along the course of the Arno. The bridge provides distinctive views of the river and the surrounding green spaces and is an ideal place for a walk or cycle ride, particularly in the late afternoon, when the changing light brings out the character of both the landscape and the bridge.
