The palio of the ancient maritime Republics in an eight-rowing galleon competition between Amalfi, Genova, Pisa, Venezia crews, born in the post war period and organised in rotation in the four cities.
The competition is proceded by the solemn historical procession, consisting of costumes that, with flags, trumpets and drums, interpretes episodes and characters related to the maritime history of the city where the Regata takes place.
The sport competition seek to challenge the crews of the four cities, each consisting of 8 rowers and a helmsman, on board boats, all constructed with the same parameters, which stands out in colours and poles.
The pollen that first cuts the finish line receveis the gold and silver trophy field made by the orafa fiorentina school, which remains in the hand of the winning city for a year.
In 2017 the city of Pisa will host the 62nd edition of the Palio of the ancient maritime republics.
