The Battle of Caporetto was fought during the First World War between the Italian Southern Army and the Austro-Hungarian and German forces. At the helm of the Italian army General Luigi Cadorna, who after the defeat was replaced by Armando Diaz.
The clash, which began at 2 o'clock on 24th October 1917, is the most serious defeat in the history of the Italian army, so that the term Caporetto is still used today as a synonym of disastrous defeat.
A defeat that was an occasion for rebirth: the Italian units reorganized quite quickly and stopped the Austro-Hungarian troops and Germans in the subsequent first battle of Piave, defending the new defensive line on which Cadorna had fallen.
