On Thursday 23 and Friday 24 October 2025, the fourteenth edition of the European Cathedrals Conference will be held. This event, conceived and organised by the Opera della Primarziale Pisana, is dedicated to the artistic, architectural and cultural heritage gathered around the most prestigious European cathedrals.
This year's theme is 'The conservation of sacred art, a vehicle for re-evangelisation' .
Over the years, EUROPEAN CATHEDRALS has built a strong network of connections with the main cathedrals scattered throughout Europe and consolidated partnerships with their respective managing bodies.
The 2025 edition is being held in collaboration with St. John's Co-Cathedral, Malta, where the first stage of the conference took place on 8/9 May.
Not just “Material Heritage”In this jubilee year, our cathedrals are experiencing a period of great fervour, awaiting the many “pilgrims of hope” who, without interruption, join and mingle with the many visitors in search of an unforgettable experience, the satisfaction of a need for knowledge, or curiosity.
This is an opportunity to propose a reinterpretation of our religious cultural heritage, whose “epiphany” is before our eyes and continues to exert its charm and attraction. There is a great deal of excitement surrounding the need to reconnect with the younger generations in order to communicate our cultural heritage in a new way. However, a syntax has been lost that now needs to be reconstructed.
Cathedrals are a special type of monumental building, housing collections that are not only works of art but also works of devotion, visited by streams of visitors who are not only worshippers and not only tourists.
Ultimately, a cathedral is a hybrid organism, which, in its day-to-day management and long-term planning, must take into account a multitude of factors: values, sensibilities, tools and innovation.
All this in a balance that is never stable.
