PISA 1946. DALLE MACERIE AL FUTURO. The 80th Anniversary of the Exhibition of 14th-Century Pisan Sculpture.

A journey through the history, memory, and rebirth of Pisa.

In the summer of 1946, Pisa entrusted art with the task of rebuilding. The legendary Exhibition of 14th-Century Pisan Sculpture, held in the newly restored halls of the former monastery and prison of San Matteo, marked the rebirth of a city severely scarred by the war and the return to the community of an artistic heritage saved from destruction.

Eighty years after that event, the National Museum of San Matteo celebrates this extraordinary chapter with an exhibition that—through period photographs, casts, and an immersive installation blending documentary and video art created by Acquario della Memoria—will bring to life the atmosphere of that exhibition and its immense cultural and civic significance.

A story of responsibility, loss, and rebirth that invites us today to reflect on the value of art as a common good: the living memory of a community and a resource for imagining the future.
Opening reception open to the public on Friday, November 6, at 5:00 p.m.

The exhibition will be open from November 6, 2026, to January 10, 2027:
