The fifth edition of Archivi.doc returns on Saturday, October 3rd, as part of the national event “Carte in dimora 2026 - Archives and Libraries: Stories Between Past and Future”, Tuscany will unveil its private archives to the public free of charge. A valuable opportunity to access and consult writings, maps, and parchments that trace the history of Italy.
The event complements the “Paper Sunday“initiative of the Ministry of Culture (MIC), which for years has organized the opening of public libraries and state archives.
In Pisa, the Archive of Palazzo della Carovana offers visits dedicated to the presence of women in the papers of the preserved archival collections. Through documents and testimonies, the tour will offer a glimpse into the role and experiences of women in the Salviati Archive, the Historical Archive of the Scuola Normale Superiore, and several archives of personalities between the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Palazzo della Carovana, formerly the Palazzo degli Anziani in the Middle Ages, was renovated by Giorgio Vasari starting in 1562, at the request of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I de’ Medici. The building was the seat of the college where the Knights of the Order of Saint Stephen were trained, a military and religious institution founded in 1561 by Cosimo I in order to embrace the maritime vocation of the ancient Pisan Republic and fight the Turkish incursions into the Mediterranean. The Palace is home to the Scuola Normale Superiore.
