Christmas Concert in the Cathedral
15 December 2022, 9 pm
This year's Christmas concert is a tribute to the Pisan composer Giovan Carlo Maria Clari.
A son of art, in his youth protected by the same Grand Prince Ferdinando di Toscana who supported Alessandro Scarlatti and encouraged the first steps of Georg Friedrich Händel, from 1724 to his death the composer was at the head of the Pisa Cathedral Chapel, to which he restored artistic dignity.
Riccardo Donati, his successor as the Cathedral's current chapel master, has transcribed into modern notation a number of autograph scores preserved in the Musical Fund of the Opera della Primaziale Archive, a vast and precious collection of manuscripts and prints that recounts, from the 17th century to the present day, the Duomo's important musical and liturgical tradition through a rich and complex corpus of sacred music that, with its almost 4,000 titles and over 1,000 composers, is one of the largest in Tuscany.
And it is precisely Riccardo Donati who will conduct three of the pieces transcribed for performance in the Cathedral.
The children's choir will conclude the concert with a performance of some traditional Christmas carols.
