Bringing to light the work that normally remains behind the scenes: the skills, research and daily care that make possible the conservation of one of the most famous monumental complexes in the world: this is the meaning of the initiative that the Opera della Primaziale Pisana is proposing on Monday 19 October, on the occasion of European Restoration Day, with an afternoon open to the public dedicated to the restoration and conservation activities underway in Piazza del Duomo.
The event kicks off at 4:00 PM at the Auditorium, where the Opera's restoration team will share their work and offer an overview of the activities currently affecting the monuments of Piazza del Duomo and its collections. At the end, the afternoon will continue with a journey through several construction sites to bring the public closer to the places where heritage protection takes shape every day, particularly in the Cathedral, the Baptistery, and the Camposanto.
The initiative focuses on the people and professionals who work consistently on the Piazza's heritage: restorers and technicians called upon to address a wide variety of materials, eras, and conservation issues. A wealth of expertise that combines field experience, study, monitoring, and research, allowing the Opera to directly and continuously monitor complex interventions on monuments subjected to extraordinary daily pressure from visitors and pilgrims.
European Restoration Day thus becomes an opportunity for the Opera to bring the public closer not only to the results of the interventions, but to the processes that make them possible: a constant, often barely visible, activity that accompanies the life of the monuments and ensures their transmission to future generations.
