Cairoli is the surname of 5 brothers, Italian patriots of the Risorgimento.

The Pisans call it Piazza della Berlina, here those who committed minor offences were once put to the pillory, that is, to public shame.  Another old name of the square is 'dei Chavoli', as the farmers' market was also held here.
