The exhibition 'Beyond the Stain' has been extended until Sunday 19 March 2023.
BEYOND THE STAIN. ETCHINGS BY GIOVANNI FATTORI
In 1883, Giovanni Fattori, by then far from the glorious season of the "macchia", publicly inaugurated his activity as an engraver with the large plate of Cavalry Charge. From this moment on, for a quarter of a century, the extraordinary graphic production that engaged the great Leghorn artist in an increasingly passionate manner unfolded: it is an impressive corpus of over two hundred etchings, capable of placing Fattori at the absolute top of the history of European graphics.
The subjects proposed in the etchings touch on practically all the themes and genres in which Fattori's pictorial creativity was spread: the sunny roads, trodden by solitary soldiers on horseback, the primeval landscape of the Maremma, the deserted country paths where peasants wearily return from work, the world of humble but noble farm animals, life in the fields, embodied in the monumental figures of woodcutters and gabbrigian women fixed in poses of primordial monumentality, the world of the defeated and marginalised, depicted with total sympathy for the wretched existence of the subordinate classes.
It was only after Fattori's death that people began to realise that, if Fattori had been great in painting, he must have been considered supreme in engraving: in 1984, Roberto Tasi could thus state that 'we realise then that this graphic enterprise is the most powerful, modern and original episode of the entire Italian 19th century, worthy of European competition and placement'.
The thirty etchings on display, kept at the Museo della Grafica in Palazzo Lanfranchi and part of the splendid collection of Sebastiano Timpanaro, science historian and art collector, are able to suggest to the visitor the reasons why the greatest Italian engravers of the 20th century have loved, studied and freely evoked in their works the infinite suggestions conveyed by the admirable Factorian etchings.
The exhibition will be open to visitors at the Museo della Grafica - Palazzo Lanfranchi (Lungarno Galileo Galilei, 9) from 15 October 2022 to 19 March 2023, Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., closed on Mondays.
