'Ascending from the Sea' is a summary of the life of Gianni Calcagno, an Italian and internationally renowned mountaineer who died while climbing Mount Denali (6190 m) in Alaska.

The more than 250 photographs, chosen from an archive of 17,000, are first and foremost the documentation of a life dedicated to the mountains. Images of peaks piercing the sky, of climbs, of vertiginous walls, of ice and snow. But that's not all.

There is a synthesis of the living world: people, countries, works of art, civilisations, children, men and women. These images tell the vision of the world from the point of view of a great mountaineer who was also an explorer, scholar, writer and poet.

The exhibition, curated by Camilla Calcagno, will be open from 21 to 31 October at the Palazzo Gambacorti Atrium (Pisa City Hall) in Piazza XX Settembre, with the following opening hours: Monday to Saturday from 7.30 a.m. to 7 p.m., closed Sundays and holidays. Admission is free.
