End-of-summer nights on the Walls: four appointments with walking cinema at high altitude, video projections to relive the history of Pisa.

It starts on Friday 25 August and Saturday 2 September, on the 79th anniversary of the liberation of Pisa, with the special event featuring testimonies, documents and stories that illustrate with sounds and images the passage of World War II in the city. The excitement of the entry into the war, the German occupation, the Allied bombing in 1943, the Nazi round-ups and the partisan resistance, the Duomo sheltering displaced persons and the Camposanto fire, Pisa divided by the front.

Followed on Friday 8 and 15 September by the classic tour on the history of Pisa and the construction of the Walls, an enthralling journey through the centuries: from the ingenious workings of the Roman baths to the splendours of the Maritime Republic, from the life of Laura Ruschi to the vicissitudes of the Marzotto factory.

Departure at 9.30 p.m. at the Torre Piezometrica of the Polo Fibonacci, formerly Marzotto, with access from the cycle-pedestrian walkway outside the Walls, which can be reached from Via San Francesco or Via Vittorio Veneto. Arrival at about 11 p.m. in Piazza dei Miracoli. The length of the walk is approximately 2 kilometres. Tickets are 10 euro (plus 1.50 euro pre-sale), free for accompanying persons with disabilities. People with disabilities, with prior notice, can be taken down via the Torre Piezometrica lift as there is no lift at Torre Santa Maria. Reservations are recommended subject to availability by calling 0500987480 Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at www.muradipisa.it, at the links bit.ly/Muraliberazione and bit.ly/MuraNight and at the Torre Santa Maria ticket office during opening hours.

The tours are in collaboration with the association Acquario della Memoria. CoopCulture, Cooperativa Itinera and Promocultura make up the association of enterprises that manages the elevated walkway of the Ancient Walls of Pisa. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, the Walls of Pisa are an example of the military architecture of the period, a sign of the greatness of the Pisan Republic and today a privileged vantage point from which to admire the city.
