Inside the splendid premises of the church of Santa Maria della Spina in Pisa we find the magnificent works of artist Massimo Barlettani. The exhibition entitled Tra, Trascendenza (Between, Transcendence), curated by Riccardo Ferrucci, features five new works and an installation that blends harmoniously into the sacred surroundings of the church.

The exhibition Between, Transcendence is a tribute to life and hope, an example of how art can speak to our deepest emotions. Massimo Barlettani does not create still lives, but living natures. In his works the flowers are attached to the earth, still alive and caught in a temporary moment of their life. For the artist, the universe is in constant movement: destruction precedes a new creation, all things are imperfect, unfinished and temporary. His works thus lead the viewer to an important reflection on the ephemeral condition of existence. Massimo Barlettani's flowers are crystallised in a fleeting moment of beauty that reveals their ineffable transience.

A figurative painting? Only apparently. In reality it is an inner quest to express the powerful and invisible bond that unites all living beings.

We human beings are not alone in the world and we must necessarily stay within this universe, coexisting and relating to what we have around us. Massimo Barlettani's butterflies, which follow this latter concept, are also exhibited in the Transcendence exhibition. What we see in these works are not butterflies, in their physical connotation, but signs of life. They are taken by the artist as symbols of existence: spectacular and powerful, but at the same time fragile and delicate, at the mercy of any breath of wind. They are rendered through transparencies, they are evanescent and harmonious creatures. The latter are the protagonists of the installation Coro angelico (Angelic Choir), where a flock of butterflies unfolds around the altar of the church of Santa Maria delle Spina, thus directly exalting the noumenon of faith and the elevation of the soul and spirit.

What is contained within Massimo Barlettani's works is the continuous struggle of existence, the attraction of opposites, the desire to grow, the desire to believe, the desire to live. Massimo Barlettani feels an emotional participation in life, a melancholic afflatus that derives from the contemplation of beauty and the awareness of its transience.

The exhibition is organised by the Casa d'Arte San Lorenzo, in collaboration with the C.R.A. (Centro Raccolta Arti) and the support of FuoriLuogo, and boasts the patronage of the Region of Tuscany and the Municipality of Pisa.
