On Sunday, September 10, the 24th European Day of Jewish Culture takes place: visitors each year take up the invitation to visit synagogues and Jewish neighborhoods, attend concerts, go to themed exhibitions or meet live writers, artists and intellectuals who tell the story of the Jewish world and culture. Pisa is participating with free guided tours and a series of events to discover or rediscover the history and culture of a community that has been a protagonist of city life for more than a thousand years
Sunday, Sept. 10: free tours, books, conference and theater in the garden of the Pisa Synagogue.
The Via Palestro Synagogue and the ancient Jewish cemetery in Piazza dei Miracoli open their doors on the occasion of the European Day of Jewish Culture, with a series of events to discover and rediscover the history and culture of a community that has been a protagonist of city life for more than a thousand years. The theme for the 2023 edition is "Beauty," referring first and foremost to Italy's artistic heritage, of which Jewish sites are an essential part. The word beauty in Hebrew has several correspondences: the magnificence of objects of worship, the care of the body and its health, respect for nature, prayer and song, and even the beauty of loving sentiment.
All day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. free guided tours of the two sites, thanks to CoopCulture and the Jewish community of Pisa.
In the Synagogue garden a series of events:
- 10:30 am and 11:45 am the presentation of the books "13 months, forgotten stories of Jewish Pisa and other places" by Piero Nissim and "Shadows of the past, a history of exclusions" by Valentina Supino;
- 12:30 pm the delivery of the defibrillator;
- 4:30 p.m. the conference "God saw that it was good. God saw how much he had done: behold it was very beautiful."
- 9:15 p.m. grand finale with the play 'Neshamot'
