Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807 - 1882) is known as 'The hero of two worlds', as he fought both in Italy and in Latin America. From a very young age he supported the ideals of freedom and independence.

You know the song 'Garibaldi was wounded, he was wounded in the leg...'? On one of the panels around the statue we see the arrival of Garibaldi right nearby, he landed along the river, wounded in the leg. A doctor managed to cure him here in Pisa and so he was saved!
