Giovan Battista Donati was a great Pisan mathematician and astronomer, considered a precursor of the spectral classification of the stars. He studied at the University of Pisa together with Carlo Matteucci and Ottaviano Mossotti and devoted himself to the research and study of comets. He discovered 5 comets, the most famous of which is known as Comet Donati C/1858. Discovered on 2 June 1858, the comet appeared with a double tail, of two-ion dust, ninety million kilometers long, and was later believed to be a non-periodic comet
