Three: the perfect number! And when you think of the music of Mozart, that is the right adjective: there is not a note out of place or too much, no other melody, harmony, rhythm, instrumentation, mood, nothing would have been more appropriate than what was written by the genius of Salzburg for each occasion.
The three is the recurring number of the programme presented: three groups of different compositions, that is, three diversions (for three instruments), three canons (2 to three voices and the other double to three voices), six choral pieces (for three voices and three instruments).
The six pieces for three voices and three instruments, still little known today, were composed by Mozart between 1783 and 1788 and later brought together and called "Notturni". Little is known about their genesis, but the characteristics that strike, in addition to the (obvious) composing mastery, are their deep expressiveness and the particularity of the accompaniment: to accompany the voices, in fact, they were originally 3 basset horns or clarinets variously combined; today’s instruments (2 clarinets and bass clarinet) make their uniqueness even more valuable. Four of the six texts are by Pietro Metastasio, the other two by an anonymous poet.
