From Saturday 10th to Wednesday 28th January 2026, GAMeC (CentroArteModerna in Pisa will host the exhibition "From the Macchia to the Contemporary" dedicated to the theme of "The Landscape".
The free-entry exhibition, organized and curated by Massimiliano Sbrana, has established itself as a leading cultural event, dedicated annually to the evolution of landscape in Italian and international painting. The heart of the exhibition is precisely the dialogue between the great tradition of the Macchia —the foundation of Tuscan sensibility's identity— and the most current interpretations of the landscape, which today are measured with new urgencies, languages, and perspectives.
The exhibition brings together works that cover a long period of time, from the second half of the twentieth century to the most recent production. This chronological breadth allows us to grasp how landscape, always a privileged subject of art, has over time become a terrain of experimentation, reflection, and awareness. Contemporary works, in particular, do not limit themselves to representing nature: they question it, reinterpret it, and relate it to the social, environmental, and perceptual transformations of our present.
Alongside the masters who have marked the history of landscape art, the exhibition gives space to a new generation of artists who approach the theme with radically personal and innovative perspectives. Their works introduce a fresh, sometimes surprising language that renews and enriches tradition, showing how landscape continues to be a fertile field for contemporary artistic research.
A central role is attributed to Tuscany, the territory that gave rise to the Macchia and which continues to be a natural and cultural laboratory of extraordinary vitality. His landscapes, famous throughout the world, are not only historical memory, but also a stimulus for new forms of expression that dialogue with tradition without being bound by it.
In conclusion, “From the Macchia to the Contemporary” celebrates the continuity and transformation of landscape in art, offering the public a path that combines roots and innovation. It is a precious opportunity to discover how the relationship between man and nature continues to generate ever new visions, capable of speaking to the present without forgetting the power of history.
