A major international exhibition dedicated to Edward Hopper, one of the most important American artists of the twentieth century, is coming to Palazzo Blu in autumn 2026. The exhibition, sponsored by the Fondazione Palazzo Blu and organised by the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in collaboration with MondoMostre, with the support of the Fondazione Pisa, traces the artist’s entire career through the places that shaped his development and his artistic vision: New York, Paris and New England.
From 14 October 2026 to 7 March 2027, Palazzo Blu in Pisa presents ‘Edward Hopper’, an exhibition dedicated to one of the leading figures in twentieth-century painting, whose work has profoundly influenced the representation of modernity and the urban experience in contemporary art.
The exhibition is curated by Kim Conaty, Nancy and Steve Crown Family Chief Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and by Barbara Haskell, Curator at the same museum.
The project brings together over 150 works, including oil paintings, drawings, etchings, watercolors, and other works spanning Hopper's entire career, from the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art. The exhibition also includes comparative works by contemporary artists and is enriched with materials from the Sanborn Hopper Archive, acquired by the museum about ten years ago, which includes printed documents, correspondence, photographs, diaries, and ephemera, offering new perspectives on the artist's life and creative process.
The exhibition “Edward Hopper” offers a comprehensive view of the artist's career, constructed not only through his most famous paintings, but also through his relationship with the places he inhabited and visited throughout his life. New York, where Hopper lived for nearly sixty years, represents the center of his artistic activity and the privileged context of his visual research; Paris, where he stayed on three separate occasions, marks a moment of formation and confrontation with European modernity; New England, on the other hand, becomes a place of observation, experimentation, and reflection on the American landscape.
Through this geographical and chronological journey, the exhibition highlights the way Hopper constructs his artistic vision: a personal synthesis between direct observation of reality, attention to light and space, and a constant search for compositional balance. From his first experiences as an illustrator and engraver to his full pictorial maturity, the exhibition captures the complexity of a journey that spans the entire American twentieth century, highlighting how the places frequented by the artist offered him constant opportunities to experiment with new techniques and compositional solutions.
