The series of exhibitions for the fifth edition of the national school project Art&Science Across Italy continues in Pisa, with a new instalment in 2026 hosted at the Museo della Grafica in Palazzo Lanfranchi from 15 to 25 April.
On Tuesday 15 April 2026, the exhibition “Atoms of Imagination. Young Talents Create Science’, which will showcase works created by students as part of the Art&Science Across Italy project, promoted by the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) and CERN in Geneva, and organised in collaboration with Italian universities. This exhibition has been organised by the INFN section in Pisa in collaboration with the Museo della Grafica, the University of Pisa, the Scuola Normale Superiore, the Virgo Gravitational Observatory (EGO), the National Institute of Optics (INO) of the National Research Council (CNR), and with the support of the associations Frontier Detectors for Frontier Physics and Fundamental Research in Physics.
The Pisa leg of the event involves a total of 165 students, who have contributed to the creation of 57 works, each inspired by a scientific topic spanning various disciplines, from physics to biology, and produced following a series of seminars and meetings with researchers held last year.
On 24 April, at the Scuola Normale Superiore, prizes will be awarded for the most significant works on display, as judged by a panel comprising representatives from the worlds of science and art. The event will serve as an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the work carried out by the students, who will receive awards and be invited to briefly share their experiences.
The winning works from this stage will form part of the project’s major final exhibition and will go on to compete in the national competition, to be held at the Real Albergo dei Poveri in Naples from 9 to 17 May. The 30 winners of the competition will receive a scholarship to attend a one-week masterclass on the relationship between art and science at the INFN laboratories or at CERN.
The secondary schools in Pisa that took part in the project are Liceo Buonarroti in Pisa, Liceo XXV Aprile in Pontedera, the Liceo Quadriennale Internazionale in Lucca, Liceo Cecioni in Livorno, and Liceo Barsanti e Matteucci in Viareggio.
The exhibition in Pisa is part of a series of 16 exhibitions taking place in as many Italian cities: Milan, Florence, Ferrara, Lecce, Genoa, Cagliari, Rome, Turin, Padua, Catania, Perugia, Bari, Teramo, Naples, Pisa and Potenza. Around 5,000 students from 146 schools took part in the 2024–2026 edition of the Art&Science Across Italy project, creating a total of over 800 works.
Art&Science Across Italy
The two-year Art&Science Across Italy project involves students in Years 11, 12 and 13 of secondary schools, with the aim of introducing them to the world of scientific research whilst catering to a range of individual aptitudes and interests. During the first year, seminars, workshops and visits to museums and laboratories are organised, which the students use as inspiration to create artistic works on scientific topics. The works produced are exhibited and awarded prizes at regional exhibitions, and the most significant pieces are brought together in the national exhibition, which marks the conclusion of the project. Since its first edition, Art&Science Across Italy has involved over 16,000 students from 15 Italian regions, where the project is coordinated by researchers from INFN sections and local universities.
Partner of Art&Science Across Italy. The 2024–2026 edition of the Art&Science Across Italy project is a collaboration between INFN, CERN and the University of Naples Federico II, under the patronage of Rai Campania and with media partners Rai Cultura and Rai Radio 3.
