The exhibition 'The Eye of Science' has been extended until Sunday 19 March 2023.

1839 marked the birth of photography and the beginning of a close and complex relationship between the new instrument and scientific practice: the camera became a fundamental resource for research, documentation and the dissemination of science. From storytelling through drawings, we move on to capturing the 'real' image through the medium of photography, in a continuous technical and scientific improvement.

The Eye of Science, a project developed by the Museo Galileo and the Museo della Grafica, aims to illustrate this fundamental cultural and scientific turning point with two exhibitions held on the same dates in Pisa and Florence:

The two exhibitions, curated by Claudia Addabbo and Stefano Casati, are organised by the Museo Galileo, the University of Florence, the University of Pisa's Sistema Museale d'Ateneo, the Fondazione Alinari per la Fotografia and the Stibbert Museum.

The exhibition in Pisa, entitled 'The Eye of Science: A Century of Scientific Photography in Italy (1839-1939)', is hosted at the Museo della Grafica in Palazzo Lanfranchi (Lungarno Galileo Galilei 9), and is divided into four sections - 'Human', 'Living', 'Earth', 'Sky' - to illustrate the applications of photography in the various disciplinary fields in Italy. On display are 228 digital prints from the originals, including many previously unpublished ones, by over a hundred authors.

The 'Human' section emphasises photography's contribution to the investigation of man from different perspectives (anthropological, ethnological, medical, psychiatric, judicial); 'Living', on the other hand, reveals its great contribution to botanical and zoological studies; 'Earth' recounts how photography has played a fundamental role both in archaeological research and documentation and in geological and volcanological studies; 'Sky', finally, shows how much and how photography has contributed to astronomical investigation and discoveries.

In addition to the four sections, the exhibition dedicates in-depth studies to some transversal aspects ("Scientific instruments") and to a representative character ("Francesco Negri, photographer and scientist").
