The exhibition has been extended until 28 February 2025.
On 21 November 2024, the Graphic Museum will open its doors to Ultrasky: Discovering of Egyptian Blue from Arts to Sciences, a unique exhibition exploring the history and technology of Egyptian Blue through the language of contemporary art.
A Fascinating Journey to Discover Egyptian Blue. Egyptian Blue, a material with high sustainability and amazing optical properties, was lost in the Middle Ages, resurfacing sporadically in the Renaissance as evidenced by the recent discovery in Raphael's frescoes in the Villa Farnesina. Forgotten, it was rediscovered in the 19th century and in recent years has attracted great attention in the international scientific community for its potential applications in various fields, from energy production to sensor technology and medicine.
The Artists. Nine contemporary artists have reinterpreted Egyptian Blue by declining it in new artistic expressions, creating original works that show the beauty and versatility of this extraordinary pigment. Viola Alpi (fashion), the CaCO3 collective (modern mosaic), Andrea Chidichimo (painting), Stefano Conticelli (design and installations), Giuliano Giuman (glass), Kamilia Kard (digital art), Matteo Peducci (sculpture), Erica Tamborini (ceramics and plastic arts) and Franco Vitelli (cosmatesque inlay).
A Journey through Time and Matter. Ultrasky offers an immersive experience that combines the aesthetics of art with the rigour of science. The infrared light of Egyptian Blue will be revealed to visitors thanks to state-of-the-art viewers, allowing them to closely observe the unique light emitted by the ancient pigment, thus revealing hidden aspects of the works of art.
The exhibition ‘ULTRASKY: Discovering the Egyptian Blue from Arts to Sciences’ will be open until 26 January 2025.
