In April, the Walls do not sleep but come alive with a series of events and initiatives. The monument is open every day until 8 p.m. and is preparing to welcome thousands of visitors expected in fine weather, especially on the weekends of Easter and 25 April.
There are many special occasions to experience the walkway in an alternative way. It starts on Friday 4 April with the Walls of Pisa Night Experience, night-time film tours with engaging audio and video content that will allow visitors to relive the history of Pisa from Roman times to medieval glories, from the industrial Pisa of the late 19th century to the present day. The cine-guides will lead participants on the high walkway projecting videos on the façades and the Walls. In fine weather, flowers bloom and enrich the walk with colours and scents. On Saturday 12 April, a special guided tour led by the staff of the Botanical Garden and Museum will enable visitors to learn more about the city's flora, from the famous capers to the shrubs and all the plants growing in the immediate vicinity. Meeting point at 3 p.m. at the Torre Piezometrica access point, arrival in Piazza dei Miracoli to continue to the Botanical Garden, the city's jewel that contains plant species and stories to tell. Recently restored and open to the public, the Bastione del Parlascio was built in several stages by Filippo Brunelleschi and Nanni Unghero. An important example of a modern Italian fortification, it recounts a specific historical period during which Florence sought to consolidate its conquest of the Alphatian city. To discover its interior and exterior spaces, its history and the thousand vicissitudes that the structure has gone through, from its use as an ice-house (diacciaia in Pisan dialect) to an air-raid shelter, on Saturday 19 and 26 April, a guided tour ‘Un bastione da scoprire’ (A bastion to discover). Departure at 5 p.m. from the Bastion, arrival in Piazza dei Miracoli via the walkway at altitude. The bombs, foreign occupation, displaced persons, hunger, massacres, civilian victims. On Friday 25 April and Friday 2 May, in Liberation Week, Mura di Pisa and Acquario della Memoria propose Mura di Pisa Night Experience special Second World War. Walking cinema at night, sounds and images narrating the passage of the conflict in the city: the excitement of the beginnings, the bombardment of 31 August 1943, the resistance of the Casarosa partisan brigade, the city divided in two by the Arno river front, the cathedral invaded by evacuees, the Nazi round-ups, until 2 September 1944, the liberation of Pisa. The exhibition ‘Lanfranco Cionna, una vita nel colore’ (Lanfranco Cionna, a life in colour) continues throughout the month at Parlascio, with works by the artist from the Marche region who has lived in Marti, in the province of Pisa, for years.
