A museum is not only a place of memory, but can become a living theater of emotions and a meeting point between art forms. Born with this vision the project "Music and Dance in the National Museums of Pisa", promoted by the new autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Culture that includes the four state museums of Pisa, supported by the General Directorate Entertainment of the Ministry of Culture and the Fondazione Pisa. Thanks to a rich calendar of concerts and choreographic performances, the Museo di Palazzo Reale, the San Matteo Museum, the Museo delle Navi Antiche and the Certosa Monumentale di Calci will be transformed into spaces where visual arts, music and dance to offer an evocative and sensory experience.
The exhibition, which will animate the museums in September and October, will have a great preview on this last weekend of July.

The first appointment is scheduled for Friday, July 25 at 5.30 p.m. at Palazzo Reale, with "Le Quattro stagioni" by Antonio Vivaldi, performed by the string quintet of the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina, with Marco Lorenzini in the role of violin soloist.
Following, double appointment for the concert "Music on the Water" by Gabriele Bracci, artistic director of the Orchestra Giovanile Toscana: 26 July at 5.30 p.m. at the Museo della Certosa Monumentale di Calci, and 27 July at 10.30 a.m. at the Museo di San Matteo. The concert will feature the full Orchestra Giovanile Toscana and will be dedicated to some compositions of the Baroque era inspired by the sea, water and mythological deities connected to it.
The fresh and lavish program of "Music on the Water" will open with "La tempesta di mare" by Antonio Vivaldi, which will see the violinist Eleonora Podestà as soloist. Follow the evocative "Wassermusik" by Georg Philipp Telemann, rarely performed in Italy and embellished with refined musical portraits of mythological deities and aquatic landscapes. Grand finale with "Water Music" by Georg Friedrich Händel, originally composed for a floating performance on the Thames at the court of George I of England. The talented musicians will be conducted by Maestro Pietro Consoloni, fine interpreter of the baroque musical repertoire.
Music will also enliven the Museum of San Matteo in August, on Saturday 23 August at 4.30 pm, when it will host the Fiorentina Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Giuseppe Lanzetta with violin soloist Leone Pini. The concert will open with Tchaikovsky's famous Violin Concerto in D major, a masterpiece of the Romantic repertoire. This will be followed by the overwhelming energy of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, described by Wagner as “the apotheosis of dance”. An unmissable concert combining virtuosity and expressive power.
There is also a rich programme for the month of September:
- On Tuesday 2 September at 10:30 a.m., the Certosa di Calci will host a musical journey between romantic passion and classical energy, with the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina conducted by Maestro Giuseppe Lanzetta. The soloist will be the young violinist Leone Pini, who will perform Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's famous Concerto in D major for violin and orchestra, Op. 35, a masterpiece of the violin repertoire for its emotional intensity and technical virtuosity. This will be followed by Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92, described by Wagner as the apotheosis of dance, thanks to its overwhelming rhythm and expressive power, which make it one of the German composer's most beloved symphonic works. The programme brings together two giants of music in a dialogue between romantic élan and classical vitality.
- Tuesday, 9 September at 5:30 p.m. in the Sala Colonne of the Museo di San Matteo with ‘Arianna e il Minotauro & Aporie del presente’ (choreography by Flavia Bucciero with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Region of Tuscany. A production that stems from a close look at the mythological figure, inspired by F. Dürrenmatt's story Il Minotauro.
- Friday, 12 September, ‘Pavlos’ will be held at the Museum of Ancient Ships at 5:30 p.m. The string quartet of the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina offers a refined musical journey through some of the most significant pieces of the classical and romantic repertoire. A concert that highlights the expressive richness of chamber music par excellence, capable of rendering both the clear formal architecture of Viennese classicism and the deep emotions of Romanticism.
- Double appointment for Saturday 13 September, at 10:30 am at the National Museum of Palazzo Reale, the soloists of the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina will pay tribute to Antonio Vivaldi by performing his vast repertoire for strings, while at 11:00 am at the National Museum of San Matteo, the Wind Quintet of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome will present a fascinating programme dedicated to the repertoire for wind quintet, one of the most versatile and colourful chamber ensembles.
- On Tuesday, 16 September, at 10:30 a.m., the Museum of Ancient Ships will be enlivened by the duo Canino (pianist) and Ardinghi (violinist), who will perform in a concert dedicated to the classical and romantic repertoire for violin and piano.
- On Sunday, 21 September, at 5:30 p.m., the Museum of Ancient Ships will host an evening of chamber music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, performed with elegance and expertise by I Solisti Fiorentini: Renzo Pelli (flute), Giovanni Riccucci (clarinet), Petru Ladislau Horvath (violin), Andrea Pani (viola) and Roger Low (cello).
- The star attraction at the Certosa di Calci Museum on Tuesday, 23 September at 11:00 am will be ‘Il più bel Cantico fra i Cantici’ (The Most Beautiful Song of Songs), curated by Flavia Bucciero (direction and choreography).
- On Wednesday 24 September at 10:30 am at the Certosa di Calci Museum, the Orchestra Toscana Classica will perform “Una notte a Broadway” (A Night on Broadway), a symphonic tribute to the most famous American musicals.
- On Thursday, 25 September, at 11:00 a.m. at Palazzo Reale, Francesco Nicolosi and Stefano Valanzuolo will perform “La musica miracolosa” (Miraculous Music), an intense musical narrative that traces the extraordinary life of Wladyslaw Szpilman, the pianist from the Warsaw ghetto made famous by Roman Polanski's film of the same name.
- On Friday, 26 September, at 5:30 p.m. at Palazzo Reale, a fascinating journey into the heart of Baroque music awaits you with a refined trio consisting of flute, cello and harpsichord, three instruments that, together, give life to an elegant dialogue rich in contrasts. The programme features selected pieces from the European Baroque repertoire, alternating virtuosic brilliance, melodic cantabile and contrapuntal rigour, in keeping with the style and taste of the courts and churches of the 17th and 18th centuries.

- Wednesday, 8 October at 11:00 a.m. at the Museo della Certosa di Calci, ‘Stabat Mater’ will be held, a poetic encounter between sacred music and contemporary dance brought to life in Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, a sacred masterpiece of the 18th century, performed by the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina conducted by Maestro Giuseppe Lanzetta in collaboration with the Consorzio Coreografi Danza d'Autore - RESERVATIONS RECOMMENDED AT +39 050 938430 DUE TO LIMITED SEATING.
- The Museum of Ancient Ships will be the protagonist of ‘La Ballata di Colapesce’ on Sunday, 12 October at 5:30 p.m. The story of Colapesce is a legend handed down through oral and written materials of Sicilian, Neapolitan and Spanish origin, collected and elaborated by the writer Giuseppe Pitrè, Benedetto Croce, Italo Calvino and the philologist Maria D'Agostino. The show won the competition ‘Activities and live entertainment in the suburbs of the city of Naples - 2022’.
- On Sunday 26 October at 10:30 am at the National Museum of San Matteo, there will be “Duo d'arpe Spignoli”, a concert of rare sonic elegance with the harp duo, protagonists of a programme that spans centuries and styles, highlighting the wide expressive and tonal range of the harp. From Pietro Domenico Paradisi's brilliant Toccata (in Henriette Renié's famous transcription) to Rossini's evocative Preghiera da Mosè in Egitto, via the classical balance of Handel's Concerto in B flat and the romantic refinement of Saint-Saëns' Fantasie op. 95, the programme is enriched with ever-changing colours and atmospheres. The journey concludes with two precious pieces from the modern repertoire for two harps: Parvis: Courtège et Danse by Bernard Andrès, with its dancing and brilliant spirit, and the Sonatine pour deux harpes by Jean-Michel Damase, a perfect example of fluid and transparent chamber music dialogue. A journey through the Baroque, Romanticism and the 20th century, entirely entrusted to the magic and harmony of two harps.
- On Tuesday, 28 October, at 11:00 a.m., the Tapestry Room of the National Museum of Palazzo Reale will be the backdrop for the performance of “La nona. Quel che resta di noi e della terra”, choreographed and conceived by Flavia Bucciero, with music by Beethoven and electronic music by Antoni oFerdinando Di Stefano.
