On 26 September, the European Researchers' Night returns. This annual event, created by the EU Commission with the aim of promoting scientific culture, is celebrated simultaneously across Europe. In Tuscany, a rich programme of initiatives is planned under the title BRIGHT-NIGHT. The name says it all: the word “night” is combined with the acronym “Brilliant Researchers Impact on Growth Health and Trust in research”, meaning that talented researchers have an impact on growth, health and trust in research.

BRIGHT-NIGHT brings together the entire world of research in Tuscany: it is promoted by the universities (University of Florence, Pisa, Siena, Siena Stranieri, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna di Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore and Scuola IMT Alti Studi Lucca) and a wide network of research bodies - the National Research Council (CNR), the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the European Gravitational Observatory (EGO-Virgo), the National Institute for Astrophysics - Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory (INAF-OAA) - with the support of the Tuscany Region, as part of Giovanisì, the regional project for youth independence.

New to this edition is the theme ‘BRIGHT Ones’, a special focus on inclusion as a core value of science that cares for people, relationships, territories and the environment.

The brightest night of the year will be enlivened in the squares of our cities by workshops, experiments, demonstrations, talks and shows. Guided tours of museums and laboratories are also planned, with research facilities opening their doors to the public. Not forgetting children, who will find a rich calendar of events designed especially for them, as well as schools, which in many cities will be involved in specific activities.

Bright Night returns to Piazza dei Miracoli this year. This event offers an exceptional opportunity to learn more about the historical and artistic heritage of one of the most beautiful and famous squares in the world. Two important cultural activities will be offered in this context.

A guided tour of the Camposanto leed by Dr. Francesca Sabbatini, a student at the Scuola Normale Superiore, will focus in particular on Roman sarcophagi, analysing their history as collectibles, their formal aspects (typology, iconography, etc.) and their reuse in the medieval and modern ages.

Two sessions:

  • 4 p.m.
  • 5.30 p.m.
