Rediscovering Perseus (Pisa 1904 -1977) / 120 years after his birth
On Saturday 30 March 2024 at 4.30 p.m., in the Fibonacci Room of the GAMeC CentroArteModerna in Pisa (Lungarno Mediceo,26), an exhibition conceived and curated by Antonio Cagianelli (well-known artist and collector) and Massimiliano Sbrana (gallery owner and curator) on 120 years since his birth, opens a focus on the Pisan artist Perseo Favilla (Pisa 1904-1977).
The works on show allow the spotlight of studies and interest on this important artist, unjustly forgotten, but who between the 1940s and the 1970s was the protagonist of numerous personal and collective exhibitions both locally and nationally.
In his paintings, he combines instances of Informal and Neo-Futurism in a personal way, but the starting point is always first-hand reality, from urban landscapes marked by construction sites and smokestacks, to seascapes - where large unfurled sails allude to the theme of the voyage - to still lifes, especially flower vases, to the dominant subject of the mountains, captured either in their splendid isolation or animated by the presence of those who lived through the glorious season of Pisan skiing, which had its mythical protagonist in Zeno Colò. Even the subjects of sacred art are filtered through his personal dimension of pain and therefore appear marked by a strong drama.
The materiality in the drafting of the colours accentuates plays of light and shadow that transfer the subjects depicted into a transcendent dimension tending towards universality.
The city was in fact depicted by Perseus in its most iconic architectural elements, as attested by the painting 'The Citadel', and in aspects of daily life, first and foremost work, evoked in the painting 'Construction Sites'.
Moreover, on 3 April 2024, at 6.00 p.m. at the GAMeC in Pisa, Lungarno Mediceo 26, there will be a meeting open to the public with Massimiliano Sbrana, who has always been particularly attentive to the valorisation and promotion of Pisa's artistic heritage from the 20th century to the contemporary, the event's creator Antonio Cagianelli and art historian Cristina Cagianelli.
The exhibition will be open from 30 March to 4 April.
