From Saturday 27 April to Wednesday 8 May 2024, the GAMeC CentroArteModerna in Pisa will host the exhibition 'La Natura Morta' edition 2024, curated and arranged by Massimiliano Sbrana.

The 'still life', a term that dates back to the late Renaissance, represents an artistic genre that has spanned the centuries, evolving and adapting to various cultural and artistic currents. Originally used to describe works depicting inanimate objects, the term has taken on different linguistic and conceptual nuances in the various European cultures, reflecting the diversity and richness of artistic interpretations. Still life, in its deepest meaning, transcends the simple representation of everyday objects to explore universal themes such as mortality, time and the ephemeral beauty of material things.
Throughout the history of art, still life has often been relegated to a marginal role in the academic hierarchy, but has always maintained a constant presence, testifying to artists' ongoing fascination with the exploration of form, composition and colour. With the advent of modernity, however, still life gained new recognition, becoming a powerful medium for artists seeking to challenge conventions and explore new visual possibilities.
Cubism, with key figures such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, revolutionised the still life genre by breaking down and recomposing objects into abstract forms, thus exploring new dimensions of space and perception. This approach paved the way for further artistic experimentation, such as that of Futurism, which sought to capture the energy and movement of modern life, breaking with the traditional static nature associated with still life.
In the post-World War II period, artists such as Giorgio Morandi continued to explore the still life genre, often focusing on simple yet deeply meditative compositions of everyday objects. While rooted in tradition, these works reflect an inner search and contemplation of the deeper meaning of objects and their relationship to the surrounding space.
Ultimately, still life, as an artistic genre, is an eloquent example of how art can transform the simplest and most humble objects into vehicles of profound expression, inviting the viewer to a broader reflection on life, death and the transitory nature of existence. The exhibition will continue until 8 May 2024 with free admission.
