On the occasion of the celebrations of the 550th anniversary of the official establishment of the current Lower Valdarno Reclamation Consortium, formerly the Ufficio Fiumi e Fossi, the Municipality of Pisa created the photographic exhibition “Pisa and its waters. Centuries of coexistence”.

The exhibition, curated by Fabio Muzzi, will be inaugurated on Friday 26 September 2025 at 09.00, in the room in the atrium of Palazzo Gambacorti and will remain open every day, from Monday to Saturday (07.30-19.30, free entry) until 10 October 2025. At the same time, the photographs will be published on the digital totems installed in the city center.

The exhibition contains twenty-two photographs chronicling the ancient relationship of the city with the waters that flow through it. The images describe particular glimpses of Pisa in relation to water, from the classic views of the Lungarni to Piazza delle Gondole, to the small fountains in the city. Curious overviews also concern the Pisan river system, which also includes the Serchio and the canal, known as “Dead River”. Other photographs, we then testify to the works created over the centuries by the Fiumi e Fossi Office, such as, among others, the Trabocco delle Bocchette in Putignano (1558), the Navicelli canal (1606), the church dedicated to the Madonna dell'acqua (1648).

The exhibition is completed by the screening of a video, specially created, which tells the story of Pisa's relationship with water: “an element that unites and does not divide the city”.
