“Moneta e promesse. Seven stories of bankers who shaped the modern world”. The book traces the origins and evolution of the relationship between banks and states through seven historical events, set in different eras and geographical contexts, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age. A journey that begins in Pisa itself, in the 12th century, when the Maritime Republic, at the centre of Mediterranean trade, was facing a growing demand for money, which the city Mint was struggling to satisfy. In this context, characterized by the intensity of trade and the development of mercantile activities, lies one of the first experiences that would contribute to the birth of bank money. The Pisan story is the starting point of an investigation that touches, among others, on seventeenth-century Venice, the birth of the Bank of England, the Kingdom of Naples, the American Revolution and Bolshevik Russia, up to the experiences of private currencies circulating in modern Europe. Through documents and archival sources, Paolo Zannoni reconstructs the relationship between banking institutions and political power, focusing in particular on the role of public and banking debt in the formation of modern monetary systems.
