The cross of Giunta Pisano, called San Ranierino, was found on a wall tinted with black smoke in the kitchen of the monastery of Sant'Anna, in Pisa, in 1793 by Alessandro da Morrona, who was the first to read the signature (JUNCTA PISANUS ME FECIT) and to recognize in the Council an absolute protagonist. After some transfers to the city the cross entered the collection of the National Museum of San Matteo in 1949. The work was submitted on that occasion, and subsequently, to restoration work, which did not completely solve the problems of conservation. The last restoration (2016 - 2017), realized thanks to the contribution of the Pisa Foundation, has solved the still existing conservative problems, furthermore the preliminary investigations carried out have confirmed the fundamental role played by Giunta in the recovery of a pictorial technique that was unknown in the Italian painting from the late Roman era.
