On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, the official celebrations for the 154th anniversary of the death of Giuseppe Mazzini will take place. The city of Pisa commemorates the Genoese patriot and thinker with a program intended to rediscover the ideal roots of our Republic. This year’s celebrations are set within a historical framework of particular significance for our country: 2026 marks both the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic and the centenary of the death of Giovanni Amendola, a leading figure of the liberal and democratic opposition to fascism.

To highlight this continuity of democratic values, the central moment of the event at the Domus Mazziniana will be a lecture by Antonio Carioti, historian and journalist for Corriere della Sera, entitled Spirituality and Politics: Mazzini’s Influence on Giovanni Amendola.

The lecture will address the direct influence of Mazzinian thought on Giovanni Amendola, tracing a rigorous historical path that links the spirituality and politics of the Risorgimento to the anti-fascist commitment, highlighting the ethical foundations that led to the birth of republican Italy.

Enriching the celebrations will be the presentation by the Superintendent for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape, architect Valerio Tesi, of an unpublished autograph letter by Giuseppe Mazzini. The history of the letter— which reached its destination after more than a century—will be illustrated by Dr. Loredana Brancaccio, who discovered it in the archives of the Superintendency.

The day will end with a concert exploring the relationship between Giuseppe Mazzini and music. In this musical journey, the audience will be guided by Maestro Marco Battaglia, a guitarist specializing in nineteenth-century music, and by the mezzo-soprano Dyana Bovolo. The concert will culminate with the first public performance of the Variations on the Song of the Bernese Herdswomen, a tribute by the contemporary composer Federico Bonacossa, professor at Florida State University, to the work of Giuseppe Mazzini. The autograph score is preserved at the Domus Mazziniana. Enhancing the performance will be the use of the guitar that once belonged to Giuseppe Mazzini.

Admission is free, accessible without architectural barriers, and open to the public.
