Dear Monica. Fragments, images, memories.
The Cineclub Arsenale exhibition dedicated to Monica Vitti, the unique face and voice of Italian cinema.

An exhibition for Monica Vitti at the Arsenale di Pisa: the historic Cineclub pays homage to the actress, protagonist of the 2024 membership card, unforgettable face of Italian cinema, with the exhibition entitled Cara Monica. Fragments, images, memories, scheduled from Tuesday 9 April to Sunday 5 May 2024. Inauguration on Tuesday at 6 pm.

The exhibition is organised in collaboration with the Municipality of Pisa and Chiara Tognolotti, Professor of the History of Italian Cinema at the University of Pisa. We thank the Banca Popolare di Lajatico for supporting the project.

Many photos of the actress and original posters of the films Il deserto rosso, L'avventura, L'eclisse, Il mistero di Oberwald, Alta infedeltà, La super testimone, L'anatra all'arancia, selected in collaboration with the Alinari Foundation for Photography, the Tognazzi Archive (University of Pavia and Cremona Municipality), the Sistema Toscana Foundation, the Castiglioncello Italian Comedy Study Centre and the Scarpelli family, will be on display in the Sammartino Room. The autobiographies and the original screenplay of the film Dramma della gelosia (all details in the chronicle) will also be on show. There will also be a space for the public's thoughts and memories.

By framing a QR code dedicated to the exhibition, fragments of Monica Vitti's life will be revealed: the most significant moments of her career will be narrated by the voice of Florentine actress Ilaria Favini, starting from the texts of her two autobiographies Sette sottane (1993) and Il letto è una rosa (1995). In addition, the audio of the dubbing of the film Il grido will be played through headphones.

Amidst clothes and accessories from the 1970s, with a game of imagination one can experience the pre-takes, thanks to the reconstruction of a dressing room with a make-up mirror and images of the artist's dress sketches, realised in collaboration with the Cerratelli Foundation, costume designers Marta Scarlatti (Pisa) and Luigi Bonanno (Rome), VLAB Vintage, Myò women's clothing, Simoncini arredamenti, Fisio Cosmetics Natural & Deluxe Haircare and Flora Salute e benessere.

The film review dedicated by the Arsenale to Monica Vitti will continue in April, on the occasion of the exhibition. Sixty years after she won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, Tuesday 9 April (8.30 pm) for the inauguration of the exhibition the restored version of the film Il deserto rosso by Michelangelo Antonioni will be screened, introduced by Chiara Tognolotti. Scheduled for the evening of 17 April is the film Ninì Tirabusciò, la donna che inventò la mossa, by Marcello Fondato, introduced in the auditorium by Bruna Niccoli. Scheduled for 5 May is Andrea Pellegrini's concert "Note della Notte", with music by Gaslini from the film La notte. A screening will follow.

The unpublished illustration for the exhibition poster was created as a tribute to the artist by award-winning cartoonist Alice Milani. She is the sole author of Wisława Szymborska, I Happen to Be Here (2015), and Marie Curie (2017) for BeccoGiallo, Universities and Sheep. Vita di don Lorenzo Milani (2019) for Feltrinelli, and Sofia Kovalevskaja (2023) for Coconino Press. He has published short stories in Linus, Lo Straniero, Delebile and Graphic News.
