In the heart of Pisa, a symbolic city of scientific and humanistic thought, Uncoded takes shape, a project that connects art, digital and computational languages.

Through video extracts disseminated on city multimedia totems, Uncoded brings digital art into urban space as a form of coordinated communication, serving the international exhibition Unframed - Towards a New Reality, which will open on 19 September at the Bastione del Parlascio as part of the third edition of Vicine Distanze, dedicated this year to the theme of Water.

Uncoded transforms the urban paths traced by totems into an invitation to discover the universe in which art and technology are intertwined. Water, a vital and symbolic element, becomes a metaphor for flows, connections and transformations: a natural and cultural principle that is reflected in contemporary artistic research and in the valorization projects promoted in Pisa, such as the initiatives related to the navigability of the Arno.
Extracts from 90 Minutes Cosmology (2023 – ongoing) will be visible from the city totems, a 90-minute visual cycle that reworks satellite image datasets through artificial intelligence algorithms, transforming them into interactive digital cosmologies. A work that testifies to the importance of cultural cooperation between Italy and China, creating a bridge between tradition, innovation and new artistic languages.

Produced by EstOvestEst-APS, in collaboration with the Department of Tourism and Commerce of the Municipality of Pisa, the Municipal Pharmacies and the Graphics Museum of Pisa, Uncoded takes place under the patronage of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) of Beijing and the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence, and with the support of Acque SpA, confirming the international scope and territorial roots of the project.

The artists
Among the artists of Uncoded, important names of international digital art stand out, such as that of Pablo Alpe, a Valencian artist who for years has dedicated himself to artistic research in the development of an algorithmic aesthetic that investigates the mathematical codes present in nature.

Also on display is the work of the artist Andrea Ciulu, born in Rome, with a work that represents his picturesque digital imagery, built on artificial memories of a life transposed onto the cybernetic side.

The prestigious presence of the Spanish artist Adrian Crego (AL Crego) takes us on a journey backwards into computer archaeology, where digital codes become the codes of our everyday life, like the obsessive superposition of GIFs, a frenetic ornament of our days spent online.

Alongside them, one of the protagonists of this first cycle is Zhang Wenchao, director of the Art and Technology Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Its presence in Pisa is the result of close collaboration with CAFA and the establishment of a joint artistic committee for the selection and criticism of works, the result of the mission to China conducted by EstOvestEst-APS in collaboration with OEOItalia.
