On Saturday 11 October, ADSI - Associazione Dimore Storiche Italiane (Italian Historic Houses Association) will inaugurate the fourth edition of the national event 'Carte in dimora. Archivi e Biblioteche: storie tra passato e futuro‘ (Paper in residences. Archives and Libraries: stories between past and future), which will accompany the ’Domenica di carta" (Paper Sunday) initiative promoted by the Ministry of Culture, which for several years has been organising the opening of public libraries and state archives, scheduled this year for Sunday, 12 October.
Over 110 private historical archives and libraries located in castles, fortresses and villas will be open to visitors throughout Italy, allowing them to take a journey through the history of our country via places rich in precious traces of our past. Visitors will be able to admire rare and valuable examples of books, papers, correspondence, manuscripts and collections, not only from libraries.
'Carte in Dimora' is one of the activities promoted by ADSI throughout the year to raise awareness among civil society and institutions of the role that historic residences play in the socio-economic and cultural fabric of the country.
In Pisa, the Palazzo della Carovana Archive will be open to visitors with guided tours organised by the Scuola Normale Superiore entitled “Stories of food and people”.
Thanks to the documents preserved in the various collections, it will be possible to discover some peculiar aspects of the relationship between food and people. The documents in the Salviati archive will be used to analyse the Salviati family's spice trade and supplies, the organisation of banquets for various celebrations, and the expenses of the wine cellar.
The archives of several prominent figures from the 19th and 20th centuries will reveal the interest, pleasure and discovery associated with certain foods.
The School's archives reveal the difficulties caused by the wars of the 20th century and the measures taken to ensure that teaching activities continued in the best possible way.
