On Saturday, January 10th, at 4:00 pm, the Church of Santa Maria della Spina will repeat the meeting to dissolve the ancient vow made to San Ranieri by the Pisans during the “terrible” flood of the Arno on January 2nd, 1777.
To thank the Patron, to whom a prayer of protection had been addressed, for having spared the city death and destruction, our ancestors, together with the rulers, promised to celebrate a votive mass in perpetuity every year. For many years Pisa dissolved that vow (the ceremony took place in the church of San Vito where Ranieri died), then everything stopped until 2012 when, on the initiative of the Company of San Ranieri, the Feast of the Sacred Vow (that is what the anniversary is called) was reinstated, celebrating Holy Mass every year in the church of Spina along the Arno, with the devoted participation of the citizens and the offering of the candle in San Ranieri by the Municipal Administration.
On Saturday, January 10, 2026, the 249th° anniversary of that Sacred Vow, the city of Pisa and the Company of San Ranieri renew their ancient promise to their patron saint.
