On the occasion of the two-thousandth anniversary of the birth of Pliny the Elder, the exhibition at the Museo della Grafica (Palazzo Lanfranchi - Lungarno Galileo Galilei, 9) aims to guide visitors through the centuries, from antiquity to the present day, to illustrate fortune, the influence and multifaceted heritage of Naturalis Historia and its author, and will be open from 18 October 2024 to 31 January 2025.
Considered the world’s first encyclopaedia, it is not possible to identify a field of knowledge for which this work has not represented an inexhaustible source of knowledge. His extraordinary ability to inspire modernity is evidenced by the influence exerted on artists, sculptors, illustrators, photographers, directors, writers, within a thematic path that enhances the countless facets of this continuous dialogue. At the centre of it is the fascinating, yet topical, dynamic relationship between man and nature, on which the objects on display, together with Pliny’s words, invite the observer to reflect in order to know ourselves better and the world around us.Thus, in the contemporary works of Francesco Maria Messina, Massimiliano Pelletti, Luigi Spina and Mari Yamazaki the visitor will pick up forms, materials, colors and perspectives of that human ingenuity that - as Pliny observed - «using Art, reproduces Nature».
Exhibition curated by Gianfranco Adornato and Alessandro Tosi, with the collaboration of Alessia Di Santi and Federico Figura.
